The Punch ran an article recently about words that were loved. You can read the article here: “Fizzy”, “Gusto”, “Disco” And Other Words We Love.
Some of the words listed in the article are terrific. I love “discombobulate”, “lascivious” and “deplane”. The reason is because these words sound like they mean. Not so much in the onomatopoeic sense a la “sizzle” but more so in the mood and tone of the word. My English teacher would be proud that I actually remembered the concept of onomatopoeia since I never paid much attention in English class at school.
Being a bit of a wordsmith and now loving word play, I thought I would join in and add to the list. Some of my favourites are:
Castigate – the word just sounds punitive.
Pizzaz – dazzling style, flamboyance, flair. Vigorous spirit; energy or excitement. All conveyed by six simple letters.
Panache – a flamboyant word imported from one of the most flamboyant of languages, French. Ooh La La!
Ruminate – let’s chew the cud fat over something that we think deeply about. To me, this is such a slow, deliberate word.
Serendipity – a happy, light, happenstance (another good one!!) kind of word. My absolute favourite and one that I love dropping into conversation.
Stupendous – an extremely impressive and marvellously clever word. It means the opposite of what it starts out to be.
Tempest – sounds harsh and violent, like the storm it depicts.
Vacillate – the word by the sound alone sounds indecisive.
Whimsy – playful and quaint and well… whimsical!

Raising the Curtain 
I like this game. We play it frequently at work. I work in a legal publishing company and what I’ve learned in my time here is that judges make up words all the time. Sometimes we hate them, like “timeously” and “impliedly” but there are others that are fantastic like “shambolic” and “convoluted” (yes, I know that not all of those words are actually made up, but Australia’s judges have a reputation to uphold here)

I love the word…SPIFFY…… When someone asks how I am I say, Just Spiffy….. It can mean so many different emotions.. too 😀

The first two words that came to mind were synchronous and exacerbate…I use them as often as I can because of how they feel when they roll off my tongue!
These sound good too, one could almost say they exacerbate synchronicity :).
I love the word Hideous, which just slams all other adjectives for ugly.
You already mentioned one of my favorite words: onomatopoeia. Love the sound of it. And my favorite medical word is “idiopathic.” I’m sure I’ll think of others as soon as I leave this site. Like Murphy’s Law. Oh, I like that one, too. 🙂
Good old Murphy, gotta love him. I’m sure the medical world is full of great sounding words… funny bone springs to mind :).
For some reason I use the words alas, and albeit a lot when I write. I have no idea why as I would never use them in daily conversation. Strange right? At any rate, I love Serendipity… it has a magical ring to it. 🙂
